Darien Area Guide

Incorporated in 1820, Darien was built from a part of Stamford, finally growing to be 14.9 square miles. With a population of over 19,000, Darien has become an affluent community on Connecticut’s ‘Gold Coast,’ nestled between Norwalk and Stamford. A bedroom community with few office buildings, most of Darien’s residents make the short commute via two Metro North Railroad stations. With an active downtown and recreation that includes four parks and two beaches as well as a hunt club and two yacht clubs, Darien is an area that is home to residents who enjoy the good life. If you’re looking for a home that will reflect you, your lifestyle, and all you’ve worked to accomplish Darien and its homes are where you should be looking.

Darien is recognized for the excellence of its schools, the churches that are active in the community, social and civic organizations and a variety of philanthropic activities. Pack a bag and come visit the ‘Gold Coast’ where you’ll find great hotels, parks and recreational activities that will draw you back again and again.

History

During the Post-Revolutionary War period, residents of Middlesex Parish petitioned over and over again for complete independence from Stamford. Finally in 1820, the General Assembly passed an act and the town was named for the Isthmus of Darien because a resident had been there and had remarked on the resemblance between the two.
