Both Indians and settlers were using the land at this time for planting and animal grazing. The Indians movied north around 1670. They created Wiltons first settlement, known as Indian Field in the Chestnut Hills area. When the Indians decided to movie from this area to be closer to the ocean, the land was open for sale to the settlers. Wilton was home to 40 families by 1725. Wilton became an independent town in 1802.

In the 1860 census, Wilton was home to 2,208 people. The land was mostly used for dairy herds, horses, and crops. There were also many other industries in Wilton, including clothing production, distilleries, and a company that made wire sieves.
