New Canaan CT Area Guide
New Canaan is located in southwestern Fairfield County, Connecticut. New Canaans location is ideal in both environment and urban access and is within minutes of several pleasant beaches and boating facilities in nearby towns. As of 2000, New Canaans population was approximately 20,000. The town is one of the most affluent communities in the United States. CNN Money ranked New Canaan first in the nation with the highest median family income.
New Canaan History
C onnecticuts colonial legislature established Canaan Parish as a religious entity in northwestern Norwalk and northeaster Stamford in 1731. The right to form a Congregational church was granted to the few families scattered through the area. As inhabitants of Norwalk or Stamford, Canaan Parish settlers still had to vote, pay taxes, serve on juries, and file deeds in their home towns. Because Canaan Parish was not planned as a town, New Canaan, when incorporated in 1801, found itself without a central common, a main street or a town hall.
New Canaan was mostly an agricultural community, until after the Revolutionary War, when the major industry became shoemaking. As the shoe business began to grow, regional settlements of clustered houses, mill, and school developed into distinct district centers.
The railroad came to New Canaan in 1868, and many wealthy residents from New York City discovered the quiet, peaceful area and built summer homes in the area. Eventually, many of the summer visitors settled year-round and began to commute to their jobs in the city, thus creating the residential community that New Canaan is today.
